Human beings have always manipulated the way they want the world to see them. Once this privilege was reserved for the rich and wealthy. From the Kings and Queens in ancient Egypt to the Royal courts in Europe, they all used different mediums to showcase altered visuals of themselves.
Fast forward to the 21st century - using a variety of social media platforms we immortalize altered snapshots of our lives, replicating the falsehoods that were once privy to nobility and wealth but is now accessible to all. The "IBOJU Collection", explores the age old African tradition of using masks and carvings to capture altered versions of a person's essence/spirit and the need to break through these realms of altered self perception, preservation and expression.
The broken mask in this collection also represents, my hope of the near future when we no longer have to protect ourselves and loved ones from COVID and anything similar. It represents the tearing down of the mask of racial and systemic inequality in all its forms all over the world and it represents the freeing of the essence/spirit of black excellence
50% of the profits from the sale of our IBOJU earrings will go to the non profit organisation "EMPOWER" . Empower was co- founded by an amazing young lady that babysits my kiddos.
Empower is a scholarship fund created by students for students. https://www.empowercmr.com/
